Paris is world-renowned for being the “city of love”, so there’s no better place to start if you’re planning a romantic getaway. With so many pretty places to simply stroll along, or galleries and museums to visit if you’re so inclined, it’s the perfect destination for lovers looking to escape their busy lives. And, of course, the food is fantastic too – you can easily spend several hours enjoying a delicious meal and sharing a bottle of wine.
Of course, part of the charm of any city is discovering places for yourself, but there’s no harm in doing some research beforehand. If you’re looking for some romantic spots to add to your 24-hour Paris itinerary, then look no further: we’ve got three lined up that are guaranteed to charm.
Located in northeastern Paris, in the 19th arrondissement, the Parc de Buttes Chaumont is the fifth-largest park in the city. It’s been created in the remains of an old quarry, giving it sweeping slopes where you can enjoy fantastic views over Montmartre. Far from looking like a quarry, it’s been totally transformed, with trees, grass, caves, a bridge and even a waterfall. There’s even a temple perched above the lake, giving it a romantic air, although you can’t currently go into the temple itself.
Pack a picnic full of fresh Parisian delights and spend the afternoon here, lazing around and reading before you head back into the city for dinner.
If culture is what you’re looking for, then Paris has it in spades – so why not take in the sights at one of its most charming galleries, the Petit Palais?
Built in 1900 for the Universal Exhibition, before being converted into a museum in 1902, the Petit Palais is home to a collection of murals and sculptures, as well as temporary displays such as ones on jewellery or haute couture.
The building itself is made up of sweeping archways and tall, airy rooms where you can take in the art at your own pace. The architectural style and decorative elements of the building make everything feel that much more romantic.
There’s something about walking along the river in Paris that is ultra-romatic – much more so than being on a noisy boat. Take a stroll, hand-in-hand, admiring the architecture around you and stopping as and when you feel like it. The banks of the river Seine have actually been registered as a World Heritage Site since 1991, and you can spot some of the city’s most famous landmarks – the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and the Notre Dame, to name a few. This activity is perfect for before dinner, or even after, to let your food settle before heading back to your hotel.
Of course, these three ideas are just the start. There are plenty of other options, such as the Jardin du Luxembourg, Bois de Vincennes, Palais Garnier, the Palace of Versailles – if you’ve only got 24 hours, you may be desperate to plan a second trip. You could even consider hosting your destination wedding here: after all, where better to tie the knot than the most romantic city in the world?
If you still have some time and want to take memorable photos with your loved one, here’s a list of the 9 best Eiffel Tower photo spots to check out.
