Johannesburg is South Africa’s largest city, and being home to one of the busiest international airports on the continent, it’s where you’re most likely to land on your trip to this incredible country. Before venturing further afield, it’s well worth exploring this historical ‘City of Gold’ and visiting some of its iconic landmarks.
If you’re lucky enough to be planning a long weekend in Johannesburg, here are some top places not to be missed.

Relax in Emmarentia
Once you’ve finished bustling around the city, sampling the delicious street food and browsing the stores in Johannesburg, head to Emmarentia. This green haven in the heart of the city boasts botanical gardens, a large lake and a plethora of birdlife, reptiles and small mammals. Out on the water, you can enjoy water sports or fishing, or simply relax in the gardens and soak up the sun.
If you fancy a nice walk, there’s a scenic trail along the Braamfontein Spruit, just near the Emmarentia Dam, which follows the river and takes you past blue gum trees and trickling rock pools.
Visit the Cradle of Humankind
This unique UNESCO heritage site is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world, where you can explore 300 limestone caves and some fascinating exhibits. Detailing the evolution of the planet over four billion years, you’ll find the skeleton of an Australopithecus africanus, an ancestral human relative from around two million years ago.
Just a short drive away, you can also explore the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden. This beautiful landscape spans over 750 acres and consists of lush gardens, rich wildlife and a 70-metre-high waterfall. Spending a day exploring these two wondrous attractions will leave you feeling both educated and rejuvenated.
See the incredible wildlife
One of the most alluring factors of South Africa is the chance to see big cats and exotic wildlife up close, in the vast savannah that covers much of the country. Basing yourself in Johannesburg gives you a great range of safari experiences, from The Lion Park, to the Pilanesberg Wildlife Safari Park, to the Plumari Private Reserve.
Keep a look out for the big five: lions, rhinos, buffalo, leopards and elephants – as well as hundreds of other rare species of birdlife on your trip. Booking a tour is the best way to experience any of the safari or game reserves in South Africa, as it ensures you travel safely with an experienced local guide who knows exactly where to find the animals.
Take it slow and plan ahead
Johannesburg is a densely populated city, and as such it is a busy place. The best way to enjoy your long weekend is to carefully plan your activities ahead of time, so that you have a clear idea of where you’re going and what you’re doing – without getting overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle. However, be sure to take your time during your allocated hours to explore the various parts of this dynamic and diverse city, as it has many hidden gems to discover.
